Backup Generator Program

Many commercial and industrial customers depend on backup power generation in emergency situations to ensure employee or customer safety, and to maintain critical business operations. Whether you are in need of an on-site generator or already have one, our Backup Generator Program delivers cost-effective solutions to your electric reliability needs.  Through our power supplier, Wisconsin Public Power Inc. (WPPI), we offer two programs that will either eliminate the risks of owning a backup generator or pay you monthly for the right to call on your generator when the demand for electricity peaks.

Option 1: WPPI-Owned Generator

WPPI will install a generator on the customer’s property for the customer’s use for a monthly fee based on usage.

  • Customers requiring backup generator capacity of 1,000 kilowatts (kW) or greater are eligible.
  • Participants enter into a 5-, 10-, or 15-year contract with WPPI.
  • Participants make lease payments to WPPI ranging between $1 to $2 per kilowatt per month, depending on the size of the generator and the terms of contract.
  • Participants are responsible for the cost of site preparation.
  • Participants must supply a dial-up telephone line for remote monitoring of the generator.

Option 2:  Customer-Owned Generator

The customer will buy and install a generator on their property and in-turn lease the generator back to WPPI at a fixed rate for their use.

  • Customers with backup generator capacity of 1,000 kilowatts or greater are eligible.
  • Generators shall be capable of at least 8 hours of continuous operation at full load.
  • Participants enter into a 5- or 10-year contract with WPPI
  • Monthly capacity payments to participants with open-transition or closed-transition generator transfer systems range between $3 to $4 per kilowatt of average on-peak connected load.
  • Monthly capacity payments to participants with paralleling switchgear range between $3 and $4 per kilowatt of generator capacity, up to the facility’s peak demand for the given month.  Participant may also receive $1.50 per kilowatt of generator export capability.
  • WPPI will reimburse the customer for energy produced upon request at a rate no less than $0.075 per kilowatt-hour.
  • Participants are responsible for fuel supply and preventive maintenance (that meets or exceeds the manufacturer’s minimum recommendations).
  • Participants are responsible for the initial cost of metering equipment necessary for WPPI to measure the generator output.
  • Backup generators must be available to WPPI upon request up to 500 hours per year
  • Backup generators must be able to respond to a request within 30 minutes of notification.
  • WPPI may require that the generator have remote start capabilities.

A written proposal from WPPI detailing the program responsibilities of each party will be prepared upon request.  If any proposed generators will involve interconnection to the utility distribution system, the procedures and requirements set forth in Wisconsin Administrative Code, Chapter PSC 119 shall be followed.
